Tesla Full Self-Driving Technology confirmed for Australia with much-hyped semi-autonomous tech now set for launch – reports

Tesla appears ready to launch its Full Self-Driving technology in Australia with a launch expected soon, according to reports.

Tesla Australia invited motoring media to test its FSD technology on Brisbane roads, with an announcement on the technology expected at 12.01am Friday.

One lifestyle outlet, Man of Many, nabbed the scoop, posting footage of one of its journalists trialling the technology on public roads, and while conceding it had been sworn to secrecy, did say it was a “very secret look at a new Tesla technology coming to Australia soon”, which suggests FSD will be confirmed within hours. That clip was then picked up by News.com.au and went viral around the world.

“Tesla is about to peel the curtains back on its most significant announcement for right-hand drive markets in years. We’re sworn to secrecy on exactly what this announcement is until this Friday, the 29th of August at 12:01 am, but we have shared a teaser video of this ground-breaking technology,” the site reported.

Full disclosure, EVCentral wasn’t in attendance at the Tesla event.

The reports would point to Tesla Australia finally launching FSD, with the brand having already confirmed there were no regulatory hurdles to clear, and that it would soon be released.

“There are no regulatory blockers for release,” Tesla Australia chief Thom Drew wrote on LinkedIn earlier this month. “We are running through the final stages of validation prior to public release.”

Tesla now calls its Level 2 autonomy technology, which is a $10,100 option, Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and its website reports that the technology means “your vehicle will drive you almost anywhere with your active supervision, requiring minimal intervention”.

“Full Self-Driving (Supervised) intelligently and accurately completes driving maneuvers for you, including route navigation, steering, lane changes, parking and more under your active supervision. Use it for quick errands, daily commutes and road trips. Currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous,” the site reads.

Exactly what features of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Australia might get remains to be seen, but it would appear all will be revealed within hours.

Hopefully legislation will force any FSD vehicle to visually indicate to other drivers when FSD is enabled so other nearby drivers can be alerted and possibly drive more defensively in the FSD vehicle proximity – maybe slow blinking of parking or driving lights would be an easy OTA update?
