Taycan tops Aussie BEV pricing
It’s official. The Porsche Taycan is Australia’s most expensive battery electric vehicle.
Pricing for the four-door sports sedan will start just under $200,000 and stretch to almost $340,000 And that’s before on-road costs.
Orders can be placed now for the three-model range but deliveries don’t start until December.
The Taycan line-up starts with the $191,000 4S, progresses through the $269,100 Turbo and tops out with the $339,100 Turbo S.
And yes, you’re right, there are no turbochargers fitted to any Taycan. Using the ‘Turbo’ badge reflects Porsche’s ICE line-up and indicates performance steps in the range.
The pricing is far above Taycan’s logical competitor, the Tesla Model S, which recently had a small price drop in Australia to start at about $141,800 before on-road costs.
The 4S comes with 79.2kWh lithium-ion battery that offers a claimed 365km range. Dual electric motors output 390kW and 640Nm and drive all four wheels via a two-speed transmission. It will accelerate from 0-100km/h in four seconds and reach a top speed of 250km/h.
The Turbo is powered by a 93.4kWh battery that is optional for the 4S. Thanks to an overboost function maximum outputs are 500kW and 850Nm, while maximum range is 420km/h. The 0-100 claim is 3.2 sec and top speed climbs to 260km.
The Turbo S boats 560kW and 1050Nm on overboost and can hit 100km/h in 2.8 sec. Range comes down slightly to 405km, while top speed is unchanged.
The first production vehicle to come with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400V, the Taycan can theoretically recharge at the top 350kW rate offered by DC chargers in Australia today. However, it is currently limited to a maximum 270kW rate.
That translates to recharge time of 20 minutes or less via the Chargefox ultra-rapid 350kW network, which Taycan owners can tap into for three years for free. They also get free access to Chargefox 50kW chargers.
Taycans also come with a 150kW onboard DC charger for use at 400V. Porsche has entered into a deal with Jetcharge to provide home charging solutions at an additional cost to the purchaser.
Standard equipment on all grades includes Surround View monitor, keyless access and start, Lane Change Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, front seat heating and ventilation, steering wheel heating, rear side airbags, electrically folding exterior mirrors, digital radio and privacy glazing.
Additional local standard equipment for the 4S includes 20-inch Taycan Sport Aero wheels, metallic paint, 14-way electric comfort seats and a BOSE Surround Sound system.
The Turbo and Turbo S also add substantive features like Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) Sport, four-zone Advanced Climate Control and ambient lighting.
Four-wheel steering is standard only on the Taycan Turbo S and torque vectoring is optional on the base-grade Taycan 4S.
The Turbo S gets a Sports Chrono package and Porsche’s sound synthesising system is standard also. Both these options will cost you extra on the Turbo and 4S.
How much we don’t know as Porsche is yet to release options pricing for the Taycan.
