Sneak peek! China-only AUDI E5 previews Aussie-bound MG IM5

The 2026 AUDI E5 Sportback has been unwrapped in China giving us valuable intel on how the closely related MG IM6 is shaping up ahead of its launch in Australia later this year.

Developed alongside the IM5, the new AUDI E5 is the result of a joint venture between Audi and SAIC (MG’s parent) that will result in a whole range of EVs tailor made for China.

Pairing with SAIC has resulted in Audi co-developing an all-new Advanced Digital Platform architecture that is used for both the AUDI E5 and the MG IM5.

If you’re wondering why AUDI is in capitals, it’s so buyers don’t mistake it with its parent Audi.

This is a China-only project which means the E5 and a follow-up SUV are unlikely ever to be exported.

It’s not been confirmed, but it’s thought both E5 and IM5 will share e-motors, so expect some carry over from the AUDI E5’s four powertrain options that include 200kW, 300kW, 425kW and a range-topping 579kW.

While the most-powerful all-wheel drive dual-motor E5 is capable of a 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.4 seconds, long-range rear-wheel drive variants will be able to cover up to 770km on a single charge on the more lenient Chinese CLTC test cycle.

All versions are said to come powered with a 100kWh battery that will be combined with an 800-volt electrical system that allows fast DC charging.

As much as 370km of range can be added in little more than 10 minutes.

When it comes to its size, the E5 has been pitched as a Xiaomi SU7, BMW i5 or Mercedes EQE alternative.

At 4881mm long, 1959mm wide and standing 1478mm tall, it is 179mm shorter, 59mm wider and 37mm lower than a BMW i5 sedan.

Designed from a clean sheet of paper, the AUDI E5 deliberately makes a break with Audi’s current design language.

Hence, the E5 dumps Audi’s famous four-ring logo and sports a cleaner, simpler look, compared to the latest A6 e-tron.

But at the rear the E5 is far more radical, with the body appearing to have a smooth look shaped in the wind tunnel for optimal efficiency.

Within, the AUDI bags a near full-width 27-inch curved 4K digital screen, while headrest speakers, advanced ambient lighting and a fragrance diffuser, plus a pair of air-cooled 50W wireless chargers means it won’t lack for tech.

It’s thought the MG IM5 will share almost all the tech offered by the E5.

Australian timing for the IM5 has yet to be confirmed, but when it arrives it has been announced that it will be renamed the ‘IM Presented by MG Motor IM6’ and will be sold alongside the renamed IM6 SUV.
