Punchy pricing for 2024 Polestar 4 as EV brand refuses to engage in price war with Tesla

Full Australian pricing and specifications for the incoming Polestar 4 have been released ahead
of its introduction in our market around August next year, with the Swedish all-electric
SUV set to be priced from $81,500 (plus on-roads) for the cheapest Long Range single motor variant.

At the top of the tree will be the Polestar 4 Long Range dual Motor flagship that costs
$93,050.

Currently, the cheapest Tesla Model Y is priced from $72,300 (plus ORCs) in Australia, with
the Long Range version costing $78,400, while the most expensive Model Y Performance
weighs in at $96,700.

Despite being priced higher, the Polestar 4 claws back a sizeable advantage when it comes to its
range. Powered by a massive 102kWh battery pack it comes with a much longer driving
range of a WLTP-verified 600km. The Tesla can only manage a maximum of 510km.

Even the more powerful dual-motor Polestar 4 that comes with an impressive 400kW and
686Nm of torque can still manage to cover up to 560km on a single charge.

Like the Polestar 2, the latest Polestar 4 comes with a rear-mounted electric motor that
produces 200kW and 343Nm of torque.

As far as performance goes, the base model is said to be capable of a 0-100km/h dash of 7.1
seconds and a 200km/h top speed. The Long Range Dual Motor flagship, meanwhile, can launch from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds, although its top speed is also limited to 200km/h.

Within, there’s a high-level of standard kit with an eight-speaker sound system, dual-zone
climate control, a panoramic roof, launch control, 20-inch alloy wheels, keyless go and
adaptive dampers.

Considering its parent is Volvo, it’s no great surprise safety has been a priority and the
Polestar 4 comes loaded with tech that includes front and rear AEB, forward and reverse
collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, emergency steering assist, secondary collision
mitigation, automatic SOS call, lane keep assist, driver attention detection and blind-spot
monitoring.

In Australia premium paint costs ($1750) that rises to a hefty $2300 for the Snow white or
Gold finish.

As standard the Polestar comes with Pilot pack that added semi-autonomous cruise control
but the more sophisticated version adds an eye-watering $8000. There’s also a Pro pack
($2500) and Performance pack ($7200). Other extra add-ons include 21-inch rims ($2500) a trick electrochromic pano rood ($2700), rear privacy glass ($700) and body coloured lower cladding ($1400).

Well, if we want to mention range then maybe we should mention “REAL” range.

I have the RWD Model Y. Website said 455km range. When I first fully charged it, it only showed 435km at 100%.

Once driven on a mild 32deg day and set the aircon to 22deg, I found that actual range is more likely to start with a 3, not 4. Air con on my Model Y is the weakest I ever had in any car I’ve driven in 30 years, and to be comfortable it really needs to be dialed down on hot days, further reducing range.

So, I’m curious how the Polestar compares in this aspect to the Tesla.
