Porsche Cayman-bashing MG Cyber GTS concept is China’s faster, lighter sports electric car

MG has unveiled the MG Cyber GTS, a four-seat coupe version of its Cyberster roadster that celebrates the car maker’s 100th birthday, and 60 years of the MG B GT.

Unwrapped at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the MG Cyber GTS looks near-production ready in the flesh, the Chinese-owned British brand has yet to reveal any official details on the new coupe, including whether or not it plans to build it.

Beneath the skin, it’s almost certain that the Cyber GTS coupe shares the Cyberster’s powertrains. That means it will come with a 74.4kWh battery pack and be driven either by a single e-motor that will muster 250kW/475Nm, or by dual motors that will generate a mighty 375kW and 725Nm of torque.

It’s thought with weight-saving measures, the very quickest Cyber GTS coupe could launch from 0-100km/h in less than 3.0 seconds.

Adding fuel to rumours that behind the scenes the Cyber GTS has already been approved for production, the show car came with an identical front-end styling to the electric roadster, including the same bumper and headlight design.

Even the 20-inch alloy wheels, rear light clusters and rear diffuser all look lifted off the standard roadster.

What’s different is the glasshouse, more streamlined roofline and rakish rear screen, while the rear boot lid now incorporates a small ducktail spoiler.

As well as ditching the electric fabric roof, the Cyber GTS also does without the electric scissor doors, suggesting as much as 200kg could have been shed, although some of that weight will have been added back in by the new 2+2 seating layout.

Claimed to pay homage to the MG C GTS Sebring race car of the late 1960s, it’s thought the Cyber GTS might feature a more fast-road or track focus to its handling, rather than replicating the relaxed grand tourer feel of the Cyberster.

If offered in Australia, the Cyber GTS could be price positioned below the Cyberster with pricing kicking off well below the estimated $130,000 the cheapest version of the MG droptop will command.

And when and if it arrives, the MG Cyber GTS will provide opposition to the all-new generation Porsche Cayman..
