Pope to go BEV with Fisker Ocean popemobile
The Pope could soon be powered purely by batteries, at least with his road transport.
US start-up EV maker Fisker has promised to build Pope Francis a battery electric popemobile.
Based on the upcoming Fisker Ocean – a Tesla-rivalling SUV – the BEV pope mobile is currently only a vision of founder Henrik Fisker, who had a meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican during the week.
But the popemobile Fisker Ocean is planned to be delivered to the head of the Catholic Church in 2022.

“I got inspired reading that Pope Francis is very considerate about the environment and the impact of climate change for future generations,” says Fisker, who released some computer-generated images of what the popemobile could look like, complete with a bulletproof glass viewing platform protruding from its roof.

“The interior of the Fisker Ocean papal transport will contain a variety of sustainable materials, including carpets made from recycled plastic bottles from the ocean.”
It’s not the first time the Pope has had zero emissions transport.

One of the most recent popemobiles was a Toyota Mirai, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV).
But the Ocean would be the first battery electric popemobile.
Popes over the years have got around in a wide variety of vehicles, including a boxy Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, a Range Rover, a Dacia Duster and a Seat Panda.
