Over-the-air updates will change the way the Genesis GV60 drives
Over-the-air updates will change the way your Genesis GV60 drives, with Korea’s premium brand saying you’ll be able to not only change your vehicle’s infotainment and map settings, but also the EV’s steering, brakes, suspension and safety offering.
In the latest step in the evolution from vehicles to devices, Genesis says customers will be able to essentially download an entire new personality for their vehicle, altering not just the way the tech works but the way the vehicle drives, too, in much the same way you might download a major update for your mobile phone.
“OTA (Over The Air) software updates were available for the infotainment system and navigation cluster, and now the OTA has been expanded to include major electronic control units, including the main control unit, the suspension, brakes, steering and the advanced driver assistance system,” says Genesis product specialist, Sean Lee.
It marks a shift from what we’ve seen so far, and from what we understand will be offered on vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. On those models, the OTA features are expected to be limited to the navigation and infotainment functions, but not so with the GV60.
In fact, the GV60 features a host of new technologies the brand says will enhance the “connection between driver and car”, and that differentiate it from Hyundai and Kia offerings that share its E-GMP platform, including a suite of biometric measures that do away with the need for an actual key.
These include a system called Face Connect, which uses a door-mounted Near Infra-Red (NIR) camera which can store two faces, and means you can unlock the door just by touching the handle. It also sets up the seating position and mirrors for that driver. Once in the car, the vehicle’s Fingerprint Authentication System means you can start the car without a key, too.
“In the GV60, the communication between driver and car is the highlight. Especially the face-connect and OTA -those latest technologies will offer the communication between driver and car,” says Mr Lee.
The OTA function will not only save you a trip to the service centre when updates are required, but will potentially allow you to purchase new updates for your GV60 long after you’re left the dealership, with the brand pointing out the biometric systems also allow for safe payments.
The new Genesis GV60 will arrive in Australia in the first half of 2022, one of three new EVs the brand will launch in the first six months of next year as the Korean premium marque pushes all in on electricity.
