New Hyundai EV Kona revealed, here mid-2023
Hyundai has revealed first images of the second-generation Kona compact SUV, which is expected to arrive in Australia as both a battery electric vehicle and hybrid in mid-2023.
The Kona will also include orthodox internal combustion models, although the hi-po ‘N’ variant is in doubt.
The company insists it’s the Kona EV that drove design thinking, with the ICE versions adapting to it rather than the other way round.
Limited detail has been revealed about the new Kona, but it is known it sits on the same K3 platform as the Kia Niro, which is sold as a hybrid and EV in Australia.
Hyundai has confirmed the new Kona is 150mm longer than the original Kona Electric at 4335mm long, is 25mm wider and has a 60mm longer wheelbase.
Without providing specific numbers, Hyundai says this growth maximises interior and cargo space.
Kona design highlights include a single piece light bar reminiscent of the Staria van stretching across the front of the car that is pixelated in the EV.
The EV also gets pixel graphic details on the intake grille and rear bumper, a pixel-inspired 19-inch alloy wheel design, black embracing line and optional black side mirrors and roof.
The hybrid and ICE share their bumper and skid plate design, and black wheel arch cladding.
Inside the Kona includes 12.3-inch dual displays, ambient lighting and shift by wire column gear selector relocated from the centre console.
No details of the BEVs powertrain and performance capabilities have been provided, but international media reports are speculating it will employ the same 150kW/255Nm front-mounted e-motor and 64.8kWh battery pack as the Niro.
