Lamborghini Aventador successor to adopt hybrid motor, but keep thumping V12

Proof the electric bell tolls for all models eventually, Lamborghini has today confirmed that its Aventador raging bull will soon adopt a new hybrid motor to complement it’s thumping V12 engine.

The details remain a little thin on the ground for now, but the Italian brand has today suggested the new Aventador will adopt a hybrid motor without sacrificing a single cylinder for the next-generation of the super car.

In true Lamborghini style, though, the hybrid powertrain will focus on performance above all else, with reduced fuel use simply a happy by-product. It’s not the first time the brand has taken this approach, either, with the electrified Sian proof of the formula.

As a result, the front-mounted electric motor sounds like it will introduce AWD – with the electric power supplementing rear-drive grunt of the V12 engine – as well as receive the need for turbocharging.

Reggiani went on to say the V12 will eschew turbochargers and noted electrification allows them to “fill in the weaknesses of the naturally aspirated engine, especially where torque is weak.”

“If you have the possibility to use an electric front axle with torque vectoring left and right, you can do something truly exceptional in terms of helping the driver for traction and handling,” the brand’s chief technical officer, Maurizio Reggiani, told US outlet Car and Driver.

“The V12 has been part of the story of Lamborghini since the very beginning. It has been present in every year of our history, which is why our strategy and our vision for the future is to continue to have a V12 coupled with a hybrid motor.”

Further details about the upcoming supercar are few and far between at present, but we do expect to see the latest Lamborghini next year.
