Is this the EV that reboots MG in Australia? $30K MG4 Urban arrives in April
The MG4 Urban entry-level EV has now been officially confirmed to arrive in Australia from April.
The new electric hatch will be offered with two battery sizes — 43kWh and 54kWh — giving buyers a choice between standard-range and extended-range versions.
Detailed specification and Australian pricing are still missing, but expect the MG4 Urban to start well below $40,000, making it a logical competitor for the BYD Atto 2.

The MG4 EV Urban adopts a front-wheel-drive layout rather than the rear-wheel-drive configuration used by the current – and unrelated technically – MG4 small car range.

MG says both MG4 Urban battery options can recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes using a suitable DC fast charger.
Despite its positioning as the cheaper model, the Urban is actually larger than the existing MG4.
Measuring 4395mm long with a 2750mm wheelbase, it is 108mm longer and rides on a wheelbase that is 45mm longer than the current car.
The new model also focuses on practicality, with MG claiming space for four adults and luggage capacity expanding to more than 1300 litres with the rear seats folded.

The Urban will not replace the existing MG4 in Australia but instead sit alongside it as part of a reshuffled lineup strategy first reported in 2025.
Under that plan, the current rear-wheel-drive MG4 range will move upmarket and is expected to drop its 51kWh and 77kWh battery options, leaving a single 64kWh version delivering around 400–450km of range.
That model will retain the 150kW/250Nm rear-mounted electric motor used in the Excite 64 and Essence 64 variants, giving it stronger performance than the Urban.
By contrast, the Urban uses a single front-mounted electric motor producing around 110–118kW and 250Nm depending on the battery variant.

The two-model strategy effectively positions the MG4 EV Urban as MG’s new entry-level electric hatch, while the existing MG4 shifts further upmarket with more performance, range and equipment.
“Designed for how Australians live today, the MG4 EV Urban has room for four adults, gear with rapid DC charging capability from 10–80% in around 30 minutes, helping drivers stay on the move,” said Dimitri Andreatidis, Marketing Director MG Motor Australia.
“Whether you’re a driver seeking an accessible EV vehicle to suit their lifestyle, or wanting to reduce their environmental footprint, the MG4 EV Urban delivers the right combination of space, technology and efficiency.”
