Hyundai Ioniq 5 teased – along with huge 5 min charging promise
Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 has begun to take shape, with the Korean manufacturer releasing the offical teaser images of the first vehicle to appear under its new dedicated EV sub-brand – as well as making some startling charging promises.
It comes weaks after early details of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 were released overseas.
The mid-size SUV will go up against vehicles like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and upcoming Eclipse Cross PHEV – and could even compete with the upcoming Kia Niro Electric – and will ride on the brand’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which is designed specifically for electric vehicles, and which will underpin a new family of Ioniq EVs.
We’ll get to what it looks like in just a moment, but first, let’s take a closer look at that charging promise.
Recharge times are seen as a major roadblock to EV take up, with owners worried about being marooned at a charging station for hours should they run out of juice.
But the Ioniq 5 promises to solve that issue, with Hyundai claiming that – when plugged into an appropriate fast-charger – that its new EV will take on enough charge to drive 100km in just five minutes.
The Ioniq 5 can also be used as a mobile power station, with Hyundai’s “Vehicle to Load” technology, which allows it to power devices and equipment – while camping, for example.
According to international reports, the Ioniq 5 will be equipped with an up to 58kWh battery pack, and will deliver a driving range of some 450km. It will also sprint to 100km/h in just 5.2 seconds, thanks to its 233kW feeding all four wheels.
What we know for certain, however, is that it looks pretty special, at least in these images. Its front and rear ends gets innovative pixel-filled light arrays, while Hyundai says its the first vehicle to get a clamshell bonnet to deliver a clean and unfussy look. It also rides on monstrous 20-inch alloys.
