Huge milestone! Volkswagen EV sales hit new high

Volkswagen has announced it has delivered its two millionth electric vehicle, just over 13 years after launching its first EV, with an ID.3 hatch handed over to a customer at its Dresden factory in Germany.

The German car-maker reached its first million EV sales milestone in April, marked by the delivery of an ID.3 GTX, and has since added another million vehicles in a little over ten months as demand for its ID range continues to grow.

Leading Volkswagen’s global EV sales is the mid-size ID.4 SUV. Since its launch in 2020 – and its arrival in Australia in 2025 – more than 901,000 examples have been sold worldwide.

The ID.3, which is not sold in Australia and has not been offered in North America since its 2019 debut, has nonetheless recorded strong global demand, with around 628,000 units delivered.

Volkswagen’s third best-selling EV is the ID.7 sedan and wagon, introduced in 2023, which has already accumulated approximately 132,000 sales.

Europe remains the key driver of Volkswagen’s EV growth, despite the company’s significant investment in China.

The brand expects its next million EV sales to be achieved more quickly, supported by updated and new models including a refreshed ID.4 – expected to adopt the ID.Tiguan name – as well as more affordable offerings such as the upcoming ID.2-based small car and compact SUV.

In Europe alone, Volkswagen sold 274,417 EVs in 2025, an increase of 56 per cent compared with 175,654 units the previous year.

That performance saw Volkswagen overtake Tesla, which recorded 238,765 sales, to become Europe’s best-selling EV brand in 2025.

Globally, however, competition remains intense. Chinese manufacturer BYD recently surpassed Tesla to become the world’s top-selling EV brand, delivering around 2.25 million battery electric vehicles over the past 12 months.
