Horses for courses: Ford Mustang Mach-E adds new tech, sportier look and yet another price cut in the US ahead of the launch of the facelifted Tesla Model Y

Ford has attempted to spark new interest in its 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E by overhauling it for the second time in six months.

The US car-maker is injecting new life into its battery-powered pony car ahead of the heavily facelifted Tesla Model Y’s arrival early next year.

The latest upgrades for the Ford Mustang Mach E aren’t radical and include a standard heat pump and an optional Sport Appearance pack.

There are a whole host of other cosmetic changes that follow an earlier update in April, when Ford introduced a new lighter e-motor to the line-up.

Back then, thanks to the new e-motor that drives the rear wheels the Blue Oval announced more power for the Standard Range version, extra torque for the Extended Range model and an improvement in range and faster charging for all models.

Ford Australia now says it expects the MY25 version of the slow-selling Ford Mustang Mach-E will arrive in the second half of 2025, with pricing and full specifications released later.

It’s thought the cars that will arrive Down Under will combine both updates into one car, for the MY25 update.

The heat pump will be standard across the line-up and is more efficient at warming up the cabin in cooler months of the year.

A new column-mounted gear lever replaces the current car’s rotary dial and frees up more space within the redesigned centre console.

Fresh paint options include Molten Magenta, Velocity Blue and Desert Sand hues, while the new Sport Appearance pack (pictured top) is available on the mid-spec Premium trim.

It adds a lower front bumper, arches, side sills and lower rear bumper that are all finished in gloss black.

The Sport Appearance pack also throws in the GT Performance models front bumper, red Brembo brakes and gloss black alloy wheels.

Inside there’s new red stitching and alloy pedals. Other changes include free ventilated seats for the Premium models.

Final additions to the line-up include the choice of fresh alloy wheels, including the Mustang Mach-E Rally edition that has yet to be confirmed for our market.

In the US the Mustang Mach-E also comes with Ford’s latest semi-autonomous cruise control dubbed BlueCruise 1.5 that already delivers hands-off driving.

Nut now, following a recent update, it can carry out automatic lane changes on the highway if it judges the car in front is traveling too slow.

Making it perfect for Australia, the Mustang Mach-E’s adaptive cruise is no lane-hogger and if its detects a vehicle behind while driving in the fast lane will automatically change back into the slow lane.

Ford says its BlueCruise can carry out 45 per cent of all lane changes on a typical drive automatically, all without the driver having to place their hands on the wheel.

The system works on 97 per cent of the both the US and Canada’s highways but in Australia the tech remains off-limits.

In the US the price of the 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E has been dropped by around nine per cent with prices kicking off at just $US36,495 ($A55,000), it’s not known if similar cuts will be made here, but it’s likely.

Slow sales here have already seen the Mustang Mach-E subjected to two significant price cuts of $7000 in December 2023 and further $8000 lopped off its price in May 2024 as competition in the mid-size SUV segment superheats.

Current local pricing has the rear-wheel drive Mach-E Select at $64,990 and Premium at $79,990, while the dual-motor all-wheel drive GT lambasted by Stephen Corby at the weekend is $97,374. All pricing is plus on-road costs.
