First look at next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: Plug-in SUV gets tough-guy makeover
Mitsubishi has dropped the first official look at the next-generation Outlander PHEV, with the brand’s new SUV entrant to launch in February 2021.
The brand is yet to confirm official timings for Australia, but this teaser image does preview the SUV’s tough new look with, the next-gen Outlander clearly modelled on 2019 Engelberg Tourer concept.
The brand is so far keeping tight-lipped on the mechanical changes in the new model, but you can expect an updated version of Mitsubishi’s PHEV infrastructure, with a likely bigger battery and longer pure EV range.
Currently the Outlander PHEV combines a 2.4-litre petrol four-cylinder with 60kW front and 70kW rear electric motors and 13.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The electric range is 54km. Speculation has so far focused on the new model getting a 2.5-litre engine, 20kWh battery pack and 70km electrified running.
It also promises to walk a new path as far as Mitsubishi’s design language, with the Outlander’s tough-guy looks to inspire future models, too.
“The Outlander is an iconic SUV for the company, so when we developed the next generation model, we took inspiration from our rich SUV heritage to realize bold and confident styling with a solid stance that excites our customers,” says Mitsubishi’s chief designer, Seiji Watanabe.
“The all-new Outlander is the first model epitomising the new generation of Mitsubishi design and the frontrunner of our design strategy.
