Coupe d’état: New 2025 Honda Prelude is out to beat the Toyota GR 86 with hybrid power
The 2025 Honda Prelude sports car reboot has been locked-in for production and confirmed for a European launch in early 2024 and paving the way for its introduction in Australia.
Releasing new pictures of the electrified Honda Prelude ahead of its dynamic debut at the Goodwood motor show, the car revealed looks almost identical to the svelte 2024 Tokyo motor show concept, suggesting it will keep its concept car looks.
While Honda Australia has refused to explicitly confirm the nameplate’s return here, a trademark application for the Prelude name made last year suggests the two-door Toyota GR 86 rival will be on the menu.

Details remain scarce on what will power the new sporty Honda but the car-maker has confirmed it will get its latest e:HEV powertrain tech.
One likely option for the Prelude is the 2.0-litre e:HEV from the latest Honda Accord that combines a four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors for a combined output of 152kW of power and 335Nm of torque.
It’s been rumoured engines will turn up the wick of its hybrid tech to at least match the 170kW/350Nm of the Toyota GR 86/Subaru BRZ.
More details are expected following its Goodwood debut later this week.
Commenting on the release of the new pics, Honda said: “The original Prelude made its European debut 45 years ago and served as a thrilling, high-performance showcase of Honda’s cutting-edge technology for five generations until 2001.
“The new model promises to be a fitting return for the renowned nameplate, as it delivers a compelling blend of style and sophistication alongside a hybrid powertrain.”
