China adds another electrified dual cab ute in Australia: Foton Tunland is a budget-priced over-sized diesel 48v mild hybrid
China’s Foton has entered the Australian electrified dual-cab ute segment with the sharply-priced super-sized Tunland line-up.
Four models are on offer, all powered by a 120kW/450Nm 48v mild hybrid 2.0-litre turbo-diesel Cummins four-cylinder engine mated with a ZF eight-speed auto.
Pricing starts at $39,990 for the V7-C 4×2, climbing to $42,990 for the V7-C 4×4, $45,990 for the V9-L 4×4 and $49,990 for the V9-S 4×4.
All pricing is plus on-road costs. Paint options are an added $690 – only white is an NCO.
Of course, the pricing is one of the Tunland’s great assets, as it tops out lower than most leading utes start. Plug-in hybrid utes such as the BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon Alpha are significantly higher-priced, while the plugless hybrid version of tne Cannon Alpha has been dropped locally.
And only the Toyota HiLux also comes in Australia with a 48v mild hybrid diesel powertrain and the cheapest pricing there is $60,580 (plus ORCs) for the SR double cab chassis 4×4.

Fellow-Chinese utes such as the diesel GWM Cannon are where the Tunland finds its price opposition.
That’s familiar territory for Foton, which competed against fellow-Chinese brands during its first foray to Australia between 2012-19.
The macho-styled Tunland is over-sized compared to its price rivals, measuring up at 5617mm long with a 3355mm wheelbase.
While the V7-C 4×2 is the fleet workhorse, the three 4x4s become progressively better equipped as they progress.
The V7-C 4×4 adds a rear differential lock and more drive modes. Both V7s have 1000kg-plus payloads.
The V9-L swaps from leaf spring to multi-link rigid axle rear suspension and the V9-S includes a front diff lock and a panoramic sunroof.
The V9s have 995kg payloads.

All models can tow 3500kg braked and all 4×4 models include low range gearing. Minimum ground clearance is 240mm.
Official fuel consumption claims have yet to confirmed for the Tunland range, which will commence deliveries locally within months. The line-up is backed by a seven-year/unlimited new vehicle warranty in Australia.
Local distributor Inchcape says the Tunland line-up has been subjected to “tens of thousands of kilometres” of local testing.
