BYD’s Mega break-through! Mighty 1MW charger reduces EV recharging time to the same as a full tank of petrol

BYD has announced that it has begun rolling out its next-generation 1000-volt hyper-fast DC chargers that can top up vehicles at the incredible rate of 1000kW.

According to the world’s largest electrified car-maker, the new Megawatt Flash Charger supports 10C charging and is capable of adding as much as 400km of range in just five minutes – the equivalent of 2km every second.

Handily, coinciding with the world’s fastest charger, BYD has announced it has also developed both an all-new Super e-Platform vehicle architecture and a fresh lithium-iron-phosphate Blade battery capable of accepting the full 1000kW.

Shown off in the luxury Han L sedan and Tang L SUV that go on sale in China later this year, a public charging test of a seven-to-50 per cent top-up was timed at an incredible 4.5 minutes.

BYD is now believed to be on track for a full charge (0-100 per cent) in less than six minutes. That means for EV users future top-ups will be at least on par with a refill of petrol at your local servo.

Helping unlock the super quick recharging times is BYD’s latest battery tech that employs a 1500V silicon-carbide power module that boosts efficiency of a top-up.

Claimed to be the most powerful charger commercially available in China, the new Megawatt Flash Charger has taken the EV world by surprise because of just how far it has surpassed rivals like the Tesla V4 (500kW), Li Auto 5C (520kW), NIO Power (640kW) and the latest XPeng S5.

It was the S5 that until now offered the world’s fastest top-up at a rate of up to 800kW.

Sadly, despite the public test, it’s not known either if any vehicles based on the Super e-Platform are destined for Australia, nor if BYD has any plans to add a few Megawatt Flash Chargers to Australia’s local charging infrastructure.
