Alpha Jax: Is this the ultimate crossover EV?
The Alpha Jax could be the most versatile EV in the world – for now, at least.
Created by Californian-based electric car startup Alpha, the chunky coupe is an off-road-focused interpretation of the Alpha Ace that was unveiled in 2020.
It’s officially called the Jax CUV, or junior all-terrain crossover utility vehicle.
Like the Ace, the Jax CUV has a retro-infused body with prominent wheel arches.
But it’s had all sorts of extras bolted on – driving lights, metal bumpers front and rear and a roof basket – to make for a more rugged look and make it better suited to adventure driving.
However, instead of just two doors there are additional back doors that look like they could be rear hinged.
Knobbly light-truck tyres fill the guards and there is beefed up suspension for a higher ride height in keeping with its intended rough road driving.
Reminiscent of higher-riding Porsche Safari cars – which included modified 911s designed to drive in rallies – the Alpha Jax has clearly been created for adventure.
Inside there are digital screens and displays as well as four seats and an audio system designed for “replaceability”.
Under the bonnet is a small luggage area, adding to its functionality.
The Jax uses the chassis and electrical hardware of the Ace.
That includes a single or dual motor setup to create either a front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
As an AWD it’s claimed to reach 60mph (96km/h) in 6.5 seconds.
The Jax is powered by a 75kWh lithium-ion battery claimed to provide about 400km of range between charges.
The Jax is also claimed to tow up to 839kg.
The Alpha Jax is on sale in America priced from US$38,000 ($49,000). Dual-motor versions sitting at the top of the range sell for US$48,000 ($62,000).
