Chevrolet teases mystery electric pickup: EV ute coming soon

The electric takeover of the USA’s truck market continued this morning, with GM and Chevrolet teasing a new EV pickup during an online key note address at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Standing in front of a fleet of darkened electrified models, GM’s global design chief, Mike Simcoe, told viewers the brand would introduce an EV to meet every “priority” over the next five years.

“Over the next five years, GM will introduce 30 new EVs globally, representing a range of options, whatever your priorities,” he said. 

While some of those vehicles he was standing in front of were familiar – like the GMC Hummer, the new Cadillac Celestiq and that same brand’s Lyriq – others we were seeing for the first time, including the shadowy outline of a Chev-badged pickup truck. 

Not much is currently known about Chev’s intentions with its EV truck, including exactly how big it is, or whether it will badged a Silverado EV or score an entirely new name, but we do now know it’s coming, and like its Hummer sibling, will no doubt be powered by GM’s Ultium battery solution.

In the most expensive Hummer, for example, that means a 200kWh battery pack, which promises a driving range north of 563km. Recharging can be done at up to 350kW, and should mean you can accrue around 160km in range in 10 just minutes.
