BYD mega brand confirmed for Australia: Ferrari-hunting YangWang coming soon!

BYD is preparing to push well beyond its current mainstream positioning in Australia – and even above new premium entrant Denza – confirming a plan to introduce its ultra-high-end electric and hybrid brand YangWang aimed squarely at marques like Porsche.

Liu Xueliange, GM of BYD Asia Pacific, confirmed the news to CarsGuide, but stopped short of detailing a specific timeframe.

“We have been actively thinking that it would come soon, but we’re not sure on the timing. So stay tuned,” he said.

“We can always bring our cars and develop our cars and production lines to suit the needs of the local market.”

At the centre of BYD’s upmarket plan will be YangWang, BYD’s flagship luxury and performance brand. Sitting above BYD’s core range, Yangwang is designed as a technology and capability showcase, with vehicles that prioritise ridiculous power outputs, advanced drivetrains and high-end interiors.

The YangWang line-up includes the U8, a quad-motor luxury SUV capable of producing supercar-level power figures, the U9 fully electric hypercar, and a large performance sedan called the U7.

While no firm Australian launch timing has been locked in, BYD has indicated that right-hand-drive markets such as the UK are likely to receive Yangwang products later this decade, placing Australia on a similar timeline.

BYD has also just introduced Denza, another premium brand within its global portfolio, to Australia, with that brand having now launched with the Prado and Patrol-hunting B5 and B8.

These models are sold under the Fangchengbao brand in China, but are being marketed as Denzas in some global markets including Australia.

Previously, it has been stated that YangWang models would also be sold as part of the Denza line-up in Australia and other markets outside China.

Combined, the four brands (BYD, Denza, YangWang and Fangchengbao) would give BYD one of the broadest line-ups in the Australian market, spanning entry-level EVs through to six-figure luxury and performance models.
