More MG4 cashbacks: As Chinese brand’s sales crash, EV prices are slashed again, PHEV and hybrids are discounted … and long-term CEO departs
MG Motor Australia has launched a bold January Summer Savings sales push, featuring significant incentives across its electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid ranges.
The program comes as its long-term CEO Peter Ciao suddenly departs and MG seeks to arrest a weak 2025 performance that saw it fall from seventh to 10th place in the Australian market and trail rival Chinese brands BYD and GWM.
At the forefront of the initiative is the MG4 electric hatch, which saw sales collapse 56.9 per cent year-on-year ahead of the arrival of an update and the new MG4 Urban in local showrooms later this year.

Under the Summer Savings offer (valid for new vehicles sold and delivered between January 1 and January 31, 2026), MG is advertising:
$4000 cashback on selected Model Year 2024 and 2025 MG4 EVs including Excite 51, Excite 64, Essence 64 and Long Range 77 and $5000 cashback on MG4 XPower flagship.

These cashbacks are deducted at the point of sale from the original purchase price and are available on new vehicles only.
They mean the MG4 51kW Excite is priced at $36,302, the 64kW Excite at $40,470, the 64kW Essence at $42,554, the 77kW Essence at $46,722 and the XPower at $48,848. Those are Victorian drive-away prices.
While the rear-wheel drive mainstream MG4 models have dipped to #31K drive-away previously, the all-wheel drive dual motor XPower has steadily dipped from its $59,990 drive-away launch pricing.
All this activity continues a pattern of repeated MG4 price adjustments seen throughout 2024 and 2025 as MG has leaned on aggressive pricing in the face of strong competition from models such as the BYD Atto 3.

The January cashbacks come ahead of the arrival of the MG4 Urban and an updated interior and specification suite for the existing MG4 range.
These updates position MG to better compete with newer offerings from rival EV brands, which have eroded MG4’s early-adopter appeal.
MG is also bundling a 7kW ChargeHub home EV charger with the purchase of an MG S5 EV. However, delivery and installation of the charger may take up to five months after vehicle purchase due to fulfillment timelines.
Meanwhile, MG’s HS+ Super Hybrid line-up is also getting the cashback treatment. The Excite and Essence both get $2000 cashback, dipping their drive-away prices to $46,990 and $50,900 respectively.

Rounding out the Summer Savings campaign are modest discounts on MG’s standard hybrid offerings – $2000 cashback on HS Hybrid, $1000 cashback on MG ZS Hybrid and $500 cashback on MG3 Hybrid.
The refreshed incentive suite underscores the pressure MG faces in Australia’s fiercely competitive new-car market.
After rapid growth through the COVID era, MG’s 2025 volumes crashed 18.4 per cent in a static market, causing the brand to slip from seventh to 10th position in overall sales rankings.
This came despite a massive model expansion by MG in 2025 and contrasted with enormous growth for the likes of BYD (156.2 per cent) and Chery (176.8) per cent.
Ciao had overseen MG in Australia for the last eight years.
