2026 XPeng G6 range extender hybrid revealed in China: Borrows a petrol engine from Changan and combines it with a big battery for huge range

The 2026 XPeng G6 EREV range-extender hybrid with a huge electric-only range of more than 450km has been detailed ahead of its launch in China later this year.

Leaked as part of a Chinese sales application, the new range-extender G6 combines a single 218kW electric motor with a small combustion engine made by Changan.

The G6 is set to join the hybrid X9 people-mover on-sale, while XPeng has already confirmed it will also equip its larger G7 with a range-extender hybrid.

Both mid-size SUVs will share the same powertrain.

Looking almost identical to the current battery-electric G6 sold in Australia, the EREV will borrow a 110kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder combustion engine from Changan.

Perhaps most surprisingly, instead of combining the combustion engine with a down-sized battery, XPeng is tipped to use a relatively large 55.8kWh power pack expected to offer a range of around 450km.

Impressively, the big battery will come with the same ultra-fast charging speeds as the G6, with the brand aiming for a 10-80 per cent top-up in less than ten minutes.

Even at -30C, that refill will still only take 15 minutes.

As part of testing, the new battery has been boiled at 1000C, endured an 80-tonne side impact, and survived high-energy strikes from beneath.

Finally, the new XPeng G6 EREV has been hotly tipped to be priced below the battery-electric XPeng G6, which in Australia starts at $54,800 plus on-roads for the entry Standard Range.

The chances of the X6 EREV showing up in Australia will become clearer once current local distribution is taken over by the XPeng Australian factory subsidiary from independent TrueEV.
