2026 MG4 EV Urban: New price leader for Chinese brand sizes up BYD, Geely, GWM and GAC

There’s no shortage of action in the entry-level EV space and MG wants to dial up the heat with its new MG4 EV Urban.

The MG4 Urban is cheaper than the regular MG4 that went on sale in 2023.

And while the two share a name, there’s otherwise no relation between them – other than they’re both trying to tempt buyers out of petrol-powered alternatives and provide a solid entry point to the market.

The MG4 Urban’s other role is to tempt buyers out of rival entry-level EVs – think BYD Atto 1, GWM Ora, GAC Aion UT and the upcoming Geely EX2.

2026 MG4 EV Urban: price and equipment

The MG4 Urban is the most affordable electric car from the Chinese car maker, and at from $31,990 drive-away for the sole grade available, is one of the cheapest EVs on the market.

It shares a name with the MG4, but the Urban is a very different vehicle.

The regular MG4 drives the rear wheels, the Urban drives the front wheels.

The MG4 Urban is cheaper, but actually slightly larger than the MG4.

So think of the MG4 Urban as the more practical everyday car that trades some driving excitement for everyday liveability.

As standard it comes with a 43kWh battery good for 316km of WLTP range.

For another $3000 you can get a 54kWh battery in an Extended Range variant that stretches that claimed range to 405km.

The MG4 Urban comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, 360-degree camera and roof rails.

There’s also a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch central infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Impressively, you can choose from eight exterior colours.

As well as seven airbags there’s blind spot warning, auto braking and adaptive cruise control.

The MG4 Urban is covered by a seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty. But if you get it serviced exclusively within the MG dealer network that warranty extends to 10 years with a 250,000km limit.

The battery – which uses the LFP, or lithium ferrous phosphate, chemistry – is only covered by a seven-year, 150,000km warranty.

2026 MG4 EV Urban: what we think

It may be an entry-level hatch, but the MG4 Urban doesn’t drive like entry-level motoring.

There’s no shortage of underpowered tiddlers that need a decent thrash to get up hills and keep pace with feisty traffic.

But the Urban’s single electric motor makes things a whole lot easier – and more comfortable.

With 110kW (or 118kW in the Extended Range car, which is 60kg heavier) and 250Nm it’s the torque that does most of the work.

And because that 250Nm comes on tap soon after you punch the throttle it makes zipping around town remarkably easy.

Sure, the petrolheads may think the claimed 9.0 seconds to reach 100km/h is a tad uninspiring, but it doesn’t tell the full story of a budget-priced city car that is refreshingly easy to live with.

Interestingly, the MG4 Urban a very different car to the older MG4.

In short, the MG4’s rear-drive configuration and sportier flavour makes it the more engaging car to pilot.

Meanwhile, the MG4 Urban is slightly softer with an emphasis on comfort over driving enjoyment. Its suspension is soft, but without being overly squidgy.

And channelling the grunt through the front wheels occasionally gets the traction control excited as it tries to contain the excitement.

Our brief drive of the MG4 Urban – a route mapped out by MG – took place entirely on city streets below 60km/h.

That’s because the Urban is a car that lives up to its name, in range at least.

The 316km entry-level version is not suited to road trips, and even the bigger battery with 405km of claimed range would make long distance touring something of a challenge (remembering that its freeway range is likely closer to 310-320km).

Fast charging can be done at up to 150kW, but it still takes about 30 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 per cent; calculating that out means adding about 220km of range in that half-hour.

None of which is the slightly issue if you plan to keep the car within a couple of hundred kays of home base.

The MG4 Urban isn’t as slick to drive as the regular MG4, but it’s still pretty good.

The MG4 Urban’s front-drive layout pays back in the cabin, where its modest exterior proportions make for a surprisingly practical car.

Up front there’s generous space as well as some useful storage areas, including dual angled phone holders.

The faux leather trim isn’t about to have a Rolls-Royce owner cuddling up to it, but it’s a step above the entry-level norm.

There’s also some space ahead of that, while the floating console caters for other odds and ends beneath.

It may be small on the outside but the MG4 Urban is surprisingly spacious inside.

Even in the back there’s respectable adult-friendly knee room as well as rear air vents, although cramming three larger frames side-by-side could stretch friendships.

 A 382-litre boot with 60-40 split-folding seats also slots into the useful basket, while a cavernous sub-floor space is an added bonus.

There’s loads packed into the centre screen, but MG has also fitted hard buttons and dials for basic audio and ventilation controls – which is a plus over some rivals.

2026 MG4 EV Urban: Verdict

The MG4 Urban doesn’t stand out in any way but nor does it do anything drastically wrong.

It’s just an honest, practical EV that ticks the boxes for easy, comfortable around-town motoring.

For many that will be just fine.

And, of course, it has a price tag that limbos it under many rivals, both EV and ICE varieties.

Just keep in mind that its range between top-ups makes road trips tricky.
