Six hybrids in new Toyota Yaris Cross range, pricing revealed
Toyota has continued its roll-out electrified models, announcing the Yaris Cross hybrid SUV will be priced from $28,990 plus on-road costs when it goes on-sale November 2.
That pricing undercuts the Toyota Yaris mini-hatch it is based on that starts in hybrid form $30 more expensive, albeit for a higher-grade vehicle.
But the Yaris Cross is not Australia’s cheapest hybrid. That honour goes to the Toyota Corolla, which starts in electrified from from $27,395.
All up there are six hybrids in the nine-model Yaris Cross line-up. Three of them are front-wheel drive with two electric motors, while three are all-wheel drives that add an e-motor to the rear axle.
There are three Yaris Cross grades; GX, GXL and Urban. The FWD hybrid is $2000 more than the orthodox ICE front-driver, while the AWD adds another $2000.
Full pricing for the five-seat five-door wagon is at the bottom of this story.
The Yaris Cross hybrid drivetrain combines its e-motors with an Atkinson cycle 1.5-litre triple-cylinder petrol engine to produce 85kW and average 3.8L/100km fuel consumption.
The AWD model, which can split drive 100 percent forward or up to 60 percent to the rear axle depending on traction, has a 4.0L/100km fuel consumption average.
The standard 1.5-litre non-hybrid Yaris Cross averages 5.4L/100km.
Being an orthodox hybrid the Yaris Cross does not plug in but uses its small lithium-ion battery to assist the engine and save fuel. It rarely runs by itself and then only at ultra-low speed.

All Yaris Cross models are equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense package, including pre-collision system (PCS) with daytime intersection assistance, and emergency steering assist
The Yaris Cross also features the introduction of Toyota Connected Services. It automatically relays the location of the vehicle to a 24/7 Toyota emergency call centre in the event of an incident that vehicle sensors, including airbag sensors deem appropriate.
Other standard features across the entire range include climate control, smart entry and start, adaptive cruise control, rear view camera and the latest generation multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
GXL and Urban grades gain satellite navigation, LED headlights, blind spot monitor and a panoramic view rear view camera.
The Urban swaps from 16-inch to 18-inch alloys and gains a power driver and heated front seats, and a power tailgate with kick sensor to automatically open when you swipe your foot near the rear bumper.
The Yaris Cross is covered by a five-year warranty and up to 10-year warranty on the hybrid battery. Capped price servicing applies for the first five services at $205 each.
